Some primary school pupils in Osun state on Monday staged a protest in front of the Obafemi Awolowo University campus in Ile-Ife, demanding an end to the lingering ASUU strike.

The protesting pupils of Sunshine Nursery and Primary school, Ile-Ife, carried placards with different inscriptions which read; ”Don’t borrow our future away”, ”I am the future ASUU make no mistake about it”, ”I am the future ASUU Don’t forget”, “when you stand up for ASUU then you stand up for our future”.

Recall that it is almost six months since members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have been on strike.

Other unions in the universities including Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have also been on strike for the same length of time.

According to the Proprietress of the school, Dr. Bisi Anyadike, “The protest started at 9:00am and it ends at 12 mid-day. About 80 pupils and 30 teachers with some parents participated in the protest.

“The students all demonstrated and carry placards. They asked the Federal Government to answer ASUU to ensure that their future is better than it is now. They also asked the governors to pay ASUU members salary, revamp the system and make the institutions better as they were before.

“The Federal Government should sit up and answer ASUU. We want the general public to know that ASUU strike is not just about salary. It is about the whole University structure and where Nigeria universities stands among others in the world.

“Passersby, commuters and residents joined the protest too”.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has also threatened to embark on a two-day nationwide protest starting on Tuesday.
