Protesters shut Chevron Gas construction facility in Delta

Protesters have reportedly shut down the multi-million dollar Chevron’s Escravos Gas To Liquid (EGTL) project in Delta.

It was gathered that angry protesters shut down a component of the facility on Tuesday morning.

The protesters, it was further gathered, are from the Ugborodo community, Warri South Local Government Area of the state.

The company’s dock situated in the oil-rich, but impoverished community was also crippled over perceived non-implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act, (PIA) and other demands.

Some of the demands of the protesters read thus: “Chevron implement Ikpere-HCDT as agreed with NUPRC, “Stop the gross marginalization of Ugborodo community,” “Turn around maintenance: Over 10,000 workers employed without community knowledge and “the Superintendent now employ their families instead of jobless indigenes.”

Others are “Ugborodo community workers are due for direct conversation, “Chevron: Ugborodo community can’t continue like this,” “Chevron: You cannot employ only 2019/2020 section of workers in the ongoing turnaround maintenance,” “Chevron: Obey host community rules and regulations,” “Chevron jobs belong to the community and not to the families of superintendents,” and “Chevron supervisors are not a community representatives.
