Osun 2022: Electorates should stop mortgaging their future, says REC

The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State, Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji on Thursday urged electorates to stop mortgaging their future over a certain amount of money through buying and selling of vote during election.

He said the commission is working assiduously to achieve sound solutions to eliminate or reduce drastically the trend of vote-buying and vote trading in preparation for 2023 general elections.

Raji said this during a seminar organized by the The Electoral Institute, Abuja tagged Roundtable on the incidence of vote trading in ekiti and osun state governorship elections: Implications for Democratic consolidation and 2023 general election in Nigeria, held at Osogbo, Osun State Capital.

He said, “I will always advice people that “please buy and sell vote”. Political class should ensure that when they are campaigning, they have fulfillable promises and when they are in office, fulfill your promises.

“If the promises are fulfilled, you have already laid down a process of buying votes from the electorates and then they will not hesitate to sell their votes to you without collecting a kobo and that is what I meant by “please buy and sell vote”

“This means you are buying votes but not paying for buying the votes but you have promised to do something in exchange for vote”.

Raji admonished politicians to always make fulfillable promises when campaigning and ensure that they fulfill them when they are in office so as to help improve our democracy.
