#endbadgovernanceinnigeria: Letter To Presidency, Nigerians – Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU
ADDRESSING THE NATION’S PULSE: A CALL FOR CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGUE AND URGENT ACTION
I recognise the ongoing protests across Nigeria, driven by widespread concerns about hunger, inflation, insecurity, unemployment, and other pressing issues. These issues have deeply affected the lives of many Nigerians, including the people I represent in the Osun State House of Assembly.
As a public servant and a part of the government, I understand and share the frustration and hardships faced by so many. The right to peacefully protest and express grievances is a cornerstone of our democracy, and these voices must be heard and respected. These protests are also a call for accountability and action from all of us in government.
The challenges of hunger, rising prices, security issues, and fuel subsidy removal are critical and demand urgent attention. While these issues primarily fall under the purview of the Federal Government, it is our collective responsibility as leaders at all levels to advocate for and implement solutions that will alleviate the suffering of our people.
CALL FOR GOVERNMENT ACTION
I call on the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to address these pressing concerns. Specifically, I urge:
1. Economic Relief: Implement measures to curb inflation and provide immediate relief to those affected by the high cost of living.
2. Security: Strengthen security measures to ensure the safety of all citizens.
3. Employment: Create more job opportunities to reduce the high unemployment rate.
At the state level, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, we are committed to working together to explore and implement local solutions that can provide some relief to our communities.
Security operatives must act professionally and recognize that the essence of the protests affects everyone, including them. In managing unarmed protesters when need be, I urge the use of non-lethal measures such as water cannons instead of live rounds.
ADVICE TO THE PRESIDENT
Dear Mr. President,
In light of the ongoing protests, I respectfully offer the following advice to help address the concerns of our citizens and foster a sense of unity and progress:
1. Communicate Directly and Frequently: Engage in regular national addresses and updates to the citizens.
2. Show Genuine Empathy: Demonstrate genuine concern for the hardships faced by the people.
3. Acknowledge the Concerns: Acknowledge the specific issues driving the protests.
4. Outline Actions Taken and Planned: Provide a detailed account of the actions already taken and plans to address these issues.
5. Promote Constructive Dialogue: Encourage open dialogue with various stakeholders.
6. Foster Unity and Cooperation: Emphasize the need for collective effort in overcoming these challenges.
7. Be Visible and Accessible: Engage with affected communities to show solidarity and understanding.
By focusing on these key points, you can demonstrate leadership, build trust, and foster a sense of hope and collective action among the citizens.
CALL FOR PEACE, CONDEMNATION OF VIOLENCE, AND CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGUE
I urge all parties to maintain peace during these protests. While the right to protest is fundamental, we must unequivocally condemn any form of violence, looting, or destruction of property. Such actions undermine the legitimacy of the protests and harm our nation further. Constructive dialogue and cooperation are essential for finding sustainable solutions. Let us work together to build a more secure, stable, and prosperous Nigeria for all.
LEARNING FROM HISTORY
The ongoing protests are not the first time Nigeria has faced significant demonstrations due to socio-economic issues. The memory of the #EndSARS protests in 2020, which were marred by violence and significant disruption, serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences if current protests are not properly managed.
It is essential to learn from history and avoid a repeat of the chaos experienced during the #EndSARS protests. Therefore, the government must address these underlying issues swiftly and effectively to prevent further unrest.
In my capacity, I will continue to advocate for the necessary reforms and support initiatives that address these urgent issues. Together, we can overcome these challenges and create a better future for our nation.
Sincerely,
Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU,
Honourable Member,
Osun State House of Assembly,
Representing Obokun State Constituency.
