Statement by Adewumi Adeyemi on International Youth Day
*12th August, 2024.*
Today, as we celebrate International Youth Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the youths in Nigeria, particularly those from Osun State and Obokun State Constituency. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” underscores the vital role of digital innovation in shaping our nation’s destiny and advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs).
During today’s plenary session, I had the honour of addressing the House to commend the vibrant energy and potential of our youths. Our young people are indeed the lifeblood of our nation, and any nation that neglects its youth does so at its peril.
I also took the opportunity to commend our government for the various programs and initiatives aimed at supporting our youth. However, I stressed the importance of prioritizing youth empowerment even more. By investing in their education, well-being, and entrepreneurial ventures, we are ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
Our initiatives, such as the ‘Irekandu Back-to-School Initiative’, continue to provide essential support and resources to our young people. The recent entrepreneurship training program, in collaboration with the Enterprise Development Center, Pan-Atlantic University, has empowered 200 young women with the skills to create and sustain their businesses. This program will continue in phases, reflecting our commitment to long-term impact and empowerment.
Through the Adewumi Adeyemi Foundation, we remain dedicated to educational and empowerment initiatives that equip our youth with the necessary tools to succeed. Our engagements through the NewGen Leader Initiative and impactful sessions at the Youth Empowerment Group of the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG) emphasize the importance of character and capacity building, encouraging our youth to get involved in politics and contributing to national development.
On this International Youth Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a supportive and enabling environment for our youth. By prioritizing their needs and potential, and leveraging digital innovation, we are building a brighter and more sustainable future for Nigeria.
Happy International Youth Day!
