Northern Christian Leaders Warn Against Politicisation Of Tax Reform Bills

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said that multiple and obsolete taxation has denied Nigeria so much foreign investments over the years as potential investors were scared of setting up their businesses in the country due to the tax system.

He stated this on Thursday in Kaduna at a town hall meeting for Christian leaders to deliberate and take a position on the proposed tax reform bills sent to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.

Dogara stated that Nigeria is overdue for new tax laws in order to strengthen businesses in the country.

He maintained his support for the bill, noting that the present tax system has robbed the country of so much foreign investments.

The former Speaker also stressed that the North’s social economic challenges cannot be blamed on external factors or the tax system.

The town hall meeting, which had as its theme “Church and Society: Tax Reform and Matters Arising,” was attended by Christian leaders from across the North, including bishops, pastors, and other clergy as well as Mr. Sunday Dare, who was represented by a former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Simon Achuba, among others.
