IGP Egbetokun Bans Policemen In Mufti From Carrying Rifles, Warns Against Rights Violations

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate ban on police officers carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).

The directive was issued during a virtual meeting with senior police officers, where the IGP emphasized the need for professionalism and respect for human rights within the Nigeria Police Force.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP Egbetokun condemned the practice following multiple complaints received through official channels.

“The IGP has made it clear that no officer should be seen carrying assault rifles while in mufti. Any violation of human rights will not be tolerated and will attract severe consequences,” Adejobi stated.

The directive aims to curb police misconduct and enhance public trust in law enforcement amid growing concerns over rights abuses by security personnel.

Egbetokun also warned tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, stressing the importance of adhering to standard operating procedures.

“No officer should be seen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire. All tactical squads must comply with the standard operating procedure and wear the approved uniform for their respective units,” the statement read.

Additionally, the IGP cautioned against the indiscriminate transfer of cases without written approval, noting that such practices burden parties involved and delay justice.

He urged officers at all levels to collaborate in preventing misconduct that could tarnish the reputation of the Force.
