El-Rufai Leaves APC and Joins SDP, Citing Discontent with Party

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing irreconcilable differences with the ruling party’s leadership.

In a resignation letter submitted to his ward in Kaduna on Monday, El-Rufai expressed disappointment over the APC’s trajectory, stating that recent developments had undermined democratic principles and progressive values.

“I have diligently served the APC and contributed to its growth,” he stated. “However, the party’s recent actions have confirmed a troubling disregard for the ideals I hold dear.”

As a founding member of the APC, El-Rufai played a crucial role in securing the party’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Reflecting on his tenure as Kaduna governor, he highlighted his administration’s focus on education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment.

Despite these contributions, he explained that internal party struggles and governance issues had prompted his decision to seek a new political home.

El-Rufai expressed gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, and supporters, reaffirming his commitment to democratic principles.

“As a member of the SDP, I am committed to fostering a strong opposition to the APC in upcoming elections,” he declared.

He also called on like-minded Nigerians to join him in strengthening the SDP as a viable alternative, emphasizing the need to position Nigeria as a leader in African and global politics.

El-Rufai concluded his statement with a call for unity and progress, vowing to dedicate his efforts toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
