Actress gets N5m bail over alleged naira abuse

The Federal High Court in Lagos Wednesday granted N5 million bail to an actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, in her alleged naira abuse charge.

Omoseyin, 31, was on February 13, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on a two-count charge of tampering with the naira note.

One of the counts reads, “That you Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin on the 28th day of January 2023 at Monarch Event Centre Lekki, whilst dancing during a social occasion, tampered with the sum of N100,000 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by spraying same in the said occasion.”

According to EFCC prosecutor S. I. Sulaiman, the offence contravened Section 21 (1) of the CBN Act, 2007.

Omoseyin pleaded not guilty.

The judge remanded the defendant in correctional services custody pending the determination of her bail application.

At the resumption of proceedings Wednesday, the court upheld Omoseyin’s application, filed by her lawyer, Adenike Goncalves.

Justice Aneke admitted the actress to bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety in the like sum.

He adjourned till April 3, for trial.

Omoseyin was arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Fraud Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, along Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, and was handed over to the EFCC for investigation.

She was arrested after a video of her allegedly spraying and stepping on the newly redesigned naira notes at a party surfaced online.
