I never claimed professorship, says Nigerian writer
Nigerian writer and filmmaker, Onyeka Nwelue, has said he never claimed to be a professor at Oxford University or Cambridge.
Nwelue also denied being a fake professor as allegedly published by international media organisations, Cherwell News and The Telegraph.
In a statement, which was made available to The Guardian, yesterday, the writer said he did not defraud or impersonate Oxford and Cambridge universities while he was an academic visitor at both institutions as published in the media.
He insisted that his academic documents and activities are not shrouded in fraud, adding that he was proud of what he had achieved at the age of 35.
Nwelue disclosed that, until recently, he was an academic visitor at Oxford University and a visiting scholar at University of Cambridge before he fell apart with them.
Part of his statement reads: “Cherwell News and The Telegrah refused to insert my responses where I explained to them that I have been a professor before I came here. They didn’t want to publish it. They already made up their mind.
“The Spanish word for teacher, is ‘profesor’ and the French word for teacher, is ‘professeur,’ but I never claimed I was a ‘Professor’ at the Oxford University or Cambridge.”
“What will remain in my Curriculum Vitae (CV) is Academic Visitor, Oxford University from 2021 to 2023 and Visiting Scholar, University of Cambridge from 2022 to 2023. Nothing more than that, but I can see the universities have begun removing links that have my name from their websites.
“The only problem here is the accusation of misogyny and that students paid money to come for the event. The venue I used for this event was paid for. It was not advertised as an event for students. Fans of the author came from cities like Liverpool. They had no issue coming for it.”
