BREAKING: Avoid non-essential trips to Abuja, Ghana warns citizens

The Ghanaian government, on Wednesday issued a travel advisory for the Nigerian city of Abuja, citing security concerns.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the travel advise is a result of the unstable situation in the nation’s capital and the consequent direction issued by Nigerian local authorities to hotels operating in residential buildings to close.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to alert the travelling public about recent security developments in Abuja, Nigeria, and the following instruction by local authorities to shut down hotels operating in residential complexes.”

Due to the unpredictable security situation in the city and the high risk of terrorism, criminality, inter-communal strife, armed attacks, and kidnapping, the public is recommended to avoid non-essential travel to Abuja.

“While warning travellers who must travel to Abuja out of necessity to take precautions, the Ministry will continue to monitor the situation and offer information when it improves,” said the statement.

Ghana and Nigeria, the two largest economies in West Africa, are frequently visited by travellers.

The development comes weeks after the United States and a number of foreign missions recommended against travel to the capital of Nigeria due to a terror threat.

However, the Federal Government reassured Nigerians that security services were handling the situation.

As a result of the alert raised regarding a potential terror threat in the Nigerian capital. Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, ordered his soldiers on high alert while the military, police, and Department of State Services (DSS) agents launched operations that resulted in the arrest of terror suspects.
