Carpenter kills wife over school ownership in Ogun

A carpenter, Segun Ebenezer, has allegedly beaten his wife, Omotosho, to death during an argument bordering on the owner of a private school in the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the deceased and her husband were at home when they started arguing over the owner of the property.

The argument degenerated and the carpenter reached for an iron padlock and allegedly used it to hit his wife’s head.

The 45-year-old husband, upon realising that his wife had sustained a serious injury, rushed her to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Monday, said Omotosho died while receiving treatment in the hospital, adding that Ebenezer was arrested after the deceased’s elder sister lodged a complaint at the Kemta Police Station.

Oyeyemi said “The deceased was rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, by the suspect (Ebenezer) for medical attention, but died while receiving treatment.

“Unknown to the husband, the deceased had sent a voice note to her family members, informing them that her husband used a padlock to hit her head while beating her, and that if she died, they should be aware that it was her husband that killed her.

“As soon as the voice note was played to his hearing, the husband took to his heels, having realised that his evil deed had been exposed.

“Upon the report and the recording evidence, the DPO, Kemta Division, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed his detectives to go after the husband. He was subsequently traced to Akinseku village, Abeokuta, where he was hibernating, and was promptly apprehended.”

Oyeyemi said preliminary investigation revealed that the couple’s incessant quarrel had been on the ownership of the private school the deceased built in the name of herself and the husband.

He added, “The husband who is a carpenter had wanted to take control of the school but the deceased who was an NCE graduate refused.

“This has been the reason why the suspect has always been beating the deceased (Omotosho), until the fateful day when he used the iron padlock to hit her on the head, which eventually led to her death.”

Oyeyemi said the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, directed that the suspect be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
