Court Grants Yahaya Bello N500m Bail, Adjourns Trial To February 24

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello bail in the sum of N500 million. Bello, facing a 19-count charge from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering of N80 billion, pleaded not guilty.

Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the case, imposed strict bail conditions, including:

Two sureties who must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

Submission of Yahaya’s Bello international passport.

A requirement to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until bail conditions are met.

During the hearing, both prosecution and defense counsel emphasized a cooperative approach to ensure the trial proceeds smoothly. Defense counsel Joseph Daudu, SAN, assured the court of Bello’s commitment to attending all trial sessions, while prosecution counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, acknowledged the defense’s assurances and did not oppose the bail request.

The trial is adjourned to February 24, 2024, for the continuation of proceedings.
