IGP – Police to recruit 190,000 personnel, for a Safer Nigeria
The acting inspector-general of police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, says NPF must recruit an additional 190,000 officers as the required figure is needed to match the ratio of police to population recommendation by the United Nations (UN).
IGP Egbetokun, while at the defence week for the senior executive course (SEC) 45 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Jos, Plateau state, reiterated the need to recruit more Police Officers.
He said the Nigeria’s current police strength is just over 370,000 officers which is insufficient based on a ratio of one police officer to about 600 citizens, according to the UN-recommended ratio which is one police officer to almost 450 citizens.
To meet up with the benchmark, Egbetokun said the federal government needs to increase the annual recruitment quota of police personnel from 10,000 to 20,000 in 2024. Egbetokun added that the government should direct the ministry of finance to provide funds for the procurement of modern crime-fighting equipment for the force.
As part of His recommendation for this lecture, he reiterated that his office will liaise with the chairman of the Police Service Commission and the minister of police affairs.
