Italian President, Sergio Mattarella tests positive for COVID-19
The Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, the 81-year-old president of Italy, tested positive for COVID-19 but only has a mild fever, according to a statement released by his office on Saturday.
The statement also said that while Mattarella had cancelled his appointments for the upcoming days, he would still carry out his other obligations while working alone from his Quirinale Palace apartment in Rome.
Along with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, he made a prominent appearance on Wednesday at the opening night of the new season at Milan’s La Scala opera venue.
In Italy, the president’s responsibilities are primarily ceremonial, although he or she also needs to handle political issues as they arise.
