“Leadership is a Loan” – Methodist Bishop Declares
Methodist Bishop, Rt. Rev. Timothy Olatunji, has described leadership as a loan transaction.
Bishop Olatunji made this statement during his sermon on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
According to him, “Leadership is akin to a loan granted to individuals, which must be repaid through dedicated service.”
The sermon, delivered during the presentation of Dame Julianah Osundare as the 3rd Lay President of the Methodist Diocese of Ijesa North, alongside the dedication of new diocesan officers, emphasized the critical role of being a positive influence while in positions of leadership.
Rt. Rev. Olatunji also identified a fundamental issue with leadership in the country as stemming from a flawed mindset. He noted that many political leaders perceive their election to office as a conferral of power to dominate others. In contrast, he stressed that leadership is a divine calling to serve both God and the people entrusted to one’s care.
Furthermore, he urged that leadership should be viewed as a calling and not as an opportunity to exploit the people or deprive them of what rightfully belongs to them.
Moreover, He added that the newly elected leaders must repay the loan of service entrusted to them as they assume their new offices.
