Man arraigned for assaulting a traditional Chief in Osun
A 60-year-old man, Jimoh Olowokere, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ilesa, Osun State, for allegedly assaulting a traditional chief.
The defendant was accused of pushing Chief Olugbenga Ogunniyi off from a motorcycle on November 15, 2022.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Jimoh Musa informed the court that the defendant committed the act at about 10am in Odo-Ijesa community of the state.
Musa said the defendant carried out the acts alongside others now at large, adding that he conspired with others to fight with the victim with dangerous weapons and conspired to steal his belongings.
He said Olowokere pushed down Chief Olugbenga Ogunniyi down on a bike and beat him on his knees and other parts of the body with stick.
The prosecutor added that the accused person stole the sum of N140,000 and a phone valued 180,000 with wrist watch valued N15,000, totalled 355,000, belonging to Ogunniyi.
Olowokere pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
The defence counsel, Adedayo Oladija, made application for his bail and urged the court to make the bail conditions liberal. The lawyer said the defendant was a first offender and that constitution presumes him innocent until the court says otherwise.
Musa did not object the oral bail application and said bail is at the court’s discretion.
However, Magistrate Idowu Omoniyi granted the sexagenarian bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in the same amount.
The matter was adjourned till January 18, 2023.
