Officer Killed As Gunmen Attack Calabar Correctional Centre

A Correctional Service officer has been declared dead after gunmen attacked the Afokang Correctional Facility in Calabar, Cross River State.

The spokesman for the State Command of the Correctional Service, Affanga Etim, confirmed the incident.

He added that no inmate escaped or was killed during the attack. The attackers did not get close to the main facility.

He also said more armed personnel have been deployed to the facility and everything is under control.

Narrating the incident he explains that gunmen opened fire on the security team, who also responded in like manner and the process, an Assistant Superintendent of Correction, ASC, was killed.

In the cause of the shooting, a mother and her six-year-old daughter were also hit by stray bullets during the attack and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The State Comptroller of the Correctional Service confirmed the incident and was holding a crucial meeting with his management team over the prison attack as of the time of filing this report.
