Osun Amotekun Declares Support For State Police In Nigeria

The head of the Osun Amotekun Corps, CSP Isaac Adekunle Omoyele (rtd), has expressed his support for the creation of state police forces across Nigeria.

Omoyele emphasized that the Osun Amotekun Corps is dedicated to assisting police efforts throughout the state.

During a discussion with the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) in Osogbo on Thursday, Omoyele outlined the Corps’ contributions to addressing security issues in the South-West region.

He explained, “Amotekun represents a local approach to policing, tailored to confront various security concerns in the South-West. Given the limited number of police officers, Amotekun serves as vital support for law enforcement bodies.”

He pointed out the effective collaboration between Amotekun and other security outfits in the state, fostering a unified strategy for crime prevention and response.

Regarding the concept of state policing, Omoyele welcomed it, arguing that resistance to the idea stems from personal agendas rather than the public’s best interests.

“The framework for state police, including their roles and boundaries, will be shaped by legislation,” he elaborated.

Omoyele clarified that Amotekun possesses the legal power to pursue criminal prosecutions.

“After concluding our investigations, we transfer the case files to the Attorney General for further legal proceedings,” he stated.

As part of its growth strategy, the Osun Amotekun Corps intends to launch an agro-ranger division to safeguard farmers and agricultural lands from criminal threats.

The corps is also preparing to obtain a bomb disposal unit and incorporate traditional African methods into its security practices.

Omoyele revealed that intelligence suggests some Boko Haram members use charms for protection.

Discussing recent developments, he highlighted new programs such as anti-cultism efforts, anti-robbery initiatives, specialized protection services, and agro-ranger teams to strengthen security measures.

Omoyele underscored that “ensuring the well-being of our personnel remains a key focus.”

He disclosed plans to introduce health insurance for Amotekun operatives to enhance their benefits.

He also remarked that individuals with past involvement in cultism have the potential to reform and contribute meaningfully to society.

“No one is beyond redemption; even a former cult member can change and make a positive impact,” he asserted.

To boost effectiveness, Omoyele stressed the need for ongoing training and skill development for Amotekun staff to stay abreast of contemporary security techniques.

“Our operatives will keep receiving training to ensure they’re equipped to tackle evolving security threats,” he promised.

He urged Osun State residents to work with Amotekun by sharing prompt information that could aid in preventing crime and supporting security efforts.

Omoyele reaffirmed the corps’ dedication to safeguarding lives and property, encouraging community stakeholders to back its mission for a more secure society.
