Osun Assembly Deliberates on Bills to Enhance Swift Justice Delivery

Osun State House of Assembly, during its plenary session under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, deliberated on bills aimed at promoting the swift dispensation of justice across the state.

 

Hon. Kanmi Ajibola, representing Oriade State Constituency, presented the policy thrust of the Osun State Customary Court of Appeal Establishment Amendment Bill 2025.

In his address, he stated that the bill is designed to accelerate the delivery of justice, ease the burden of pending court cases, and ensure equitable outcomes for both litigants and defendants. He noted that the bill is currently on the verge of passage.

 

Hon. Ajibola further emphasized that the proposed legislation would improve access to justice for individuals involved in customary law matters.

 

Other lawmakers, including Hon. Taofeek Olayiwola, Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi, Hon. Afeez Ibrahim, and Hon. Abiola Awoyeye, contributed to the debate, stressing that the bill, once enacted, would help shorten prolonged trials.

According to them, it would simplify legal proceedings, enhance timely justice delivery, and significantly reduce the congestion of court.

 

In a similar development, Hon. Ajibola also presented the Osun State District Customary Court and Customary Court Establishment Amendment Bill 2025, highlighting its benefits. He explained that the bill aims to strengthen the customary court system, leading to a more efficient and effective dispensation of justice, particularly in issues relating to customary law.

 

He added that the Customary Court of Appeal plays a pivotal role in upholding the traditions and customs of the people, particularly in cases involving marriage, property disputes, and inheritance.

 

In their various inputs, Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi, Hon. Taofeek Olayiwola, Hon. Afeez Ibrahim, and Hon. Olumide Fatunmise maintained that the bill would enhance the justice system, foster peace, and safeguard the cultural heritage of the state.

 

After reviewing the policy presentations and members’ contributions, Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun aligned with the lawmakers’ perspectives. Both bills consequently passed the second reading, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Kofoworola Adewumi, and seconded by Hon. Sanmi Areoye.

 

The House also resolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the Osun State Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection Services Bill 2024. The session, chaired by the Speaker, recorded notable progress before the House was subsequently adjourned.
