Osun Assembly Delibrates on Traditional and Islamic Marriage Certification Bill

The Osun State House of Assembly is considering a bill to legalize the registration of Islamic and traditional marriages within the state.
During the plenary session of Tuesday, March 18, the Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriage (REGISTRATIONS) Bills 2024 passed its second reading.
While presenting the policy thrust, lawmaker representing Osogbo, Hon. Bamidele Rasheed emphasized the need for a legal framework to register Islamic and traditional marriages in the state.
He stated that the bill aims to formally recognize these marriages under the law, ensuring that couples receive official certificates.
Additionally, the bill seeks to generate revenue for the state and align with international standards, particularly for travel and documentation purposes.
In their various submissions, lawmaker of the Osun Assembly, Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi, Hon. Sikiru Bajepade, Hon. Taofeeq Olayiwola, Hon. Kofoworola Adewumi, Hon. Abiola Awoyeye, Hon. Laide Ajibola, and Hon. Lawrence Adeoti described the bill as timely and necessary, emphasizing the need for its swift passage.
To ensure a balanced approach, Hon. Abiola Awoyeye and Hon. Lawrence Adeoti suggested that the bill should undergo a public hearing, allowing key stakeholders, including Islamic scholars, traditional leaders, and other relevant groups, to provide their input before its final passage.
After listening to the policy presentation and contributions from lawmakers, the Speaker, OSHA, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, expressed his support for the bill and its subsequently passed the second reading, following a motion by the Majority Leader, Hon. Kofoworola Adewumi, which was seconded by Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi.
