Osun Assembly Lawmaker, Irekandu, Sponsors Communal Crisis Management Bill

The lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency, Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu, has sponsored a bill aimed at addressing communal crisis management.

The Speaker of the 8th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, announced this during the plenary session of the Osun Assembly on Monday, March 24, 2025, while presenting the bill to the house.

According to the Speaker, the bill is a timely intervention as the state strives to restore peace and order in the Ifon-Ilobu Erin communities, which have been experiencing recurring conflicts.

Speaking on the bill, titled the “Osun State Communal Crisis Management and Peacebuilding Bill, 2025”, the lawmaker representing Ifon-Orolu State Constituency expressed his deep concern over the disorder, loss of lives, and destruction of property caused by the recent clashes. He commended the bill as a necessary step and urged the house should to swiftly take needed steps to make provisions for essential daily needs for displaced persons affected by the Ifon-Ilobu Erin crisis.

Meanwhile, in a statement signed and released by Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu, he emphasized the necessity of the “Osun State Communal Crisis Management and Peacebuilding Bill, 2025”.

Reiterating the bill’s provisions in the statement released and signed by Lawmaker Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU, He stated that ; “This bill complements the ongoing efforts of our state government in securing peace and stability across communities. It seeks to institutionalize proactive peacebuilding mechanisms that will extend beyond political tenures and drive sustainable development.”

“The proposed legislation provides for the establishment of a dedicated commission responsible for peacebuilding and crisis management, the implementation of early warning and rapid response systems, structured support for displaced persons and vulnerable groups, legal frameworks for mediation and restorative justice, and strengthened collaboration with traditional and religious institutions—among several other strategic initiatives aimed at fostering communal harmony.”

“This legislation is about safeguarding our state’s future—ensuring that peace is not left to chance but is deeply embedded in our governance structure.”

Furthermore, Irekandu urged the people of Osun to join hands in building a safer, stronger, and more united state. Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU is well known for his various empowerment initiatives within the Obokun State Constituency, including the Irekandu-Back to School Project and mentorship programs under the NewGen Leaders initiative.
