Osun Assembly Probes Ifon-Ilobu Communal Crisis, Introduces Bill to Prevent Future Conflicts

The Osun State House of Assembly has directed its Committee on Security and Inter-Parliamentary Relations to investigate the instigation and causes of the persistent Ifon-Ilobu communal clashes.

Recall that Daily Impact previously reported Governor Ademola Adeleke’s declaration of a 24-hour curfew in the Ifon-Ilobu community following the recent outbreak of violence between the two communities.

The Rt. Hon. Speaker, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, mandated the House Committee on Security and Inter-Parliamentary Relations to conduct the investigation within five days and submit a detailed report to the Assembly.

In response to the communal crisis, the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Oladimeji, expressed deep concern over the situation and urged the establishment of temporary shelters for displaced persons. He also called for the provision of relief materials and the deployment of necessary health and social personnel (OSEMA) to care for the injured and displaced individuals.

Earlier during the plenary session, in light of the Ifon-Ilobu crisis, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, introduced a timely bill—Osun State Communal Crisis Management and Peace Building Commission for Related Matters. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu, representing Obokun State Constituency, aims to establish a proactive, sustainable, and institutional framework for managing and preventing communal crises in Osun State.

Today’s plenary sitting, held on March 24, 2025, also featured the first reading of the Osun State Market Authority Bill 2025 and the Osun State Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Bill 2025.

Meanwhile, Hon. Kofoworola Adewumi, Hon. Abiola Awoyeye, Hon. Saheed Fatunmise, Hon. Olawale Akerele, and Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu joined in expressing their sympathy with the Deputy Majority Leader and the people of Ifon-Ilobu. They recalled the Ife-Modakeke crisis, which ended over two decades ago, and expressed hope that the Ifon-Ilobu crisis would soon become a thing of the past.
