Osun to pass People with Disabilities Bill 2024, Adeyemi hints

Lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewumi Adeyemi has hinted that the bill aimed at supporting and safeguarding People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the State is anticipated to be passed in 2024.

Adeyemi conveyed this during his participation as a special guest of honour at an event held in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, in observance of this year’s International Day of Disabled Persons Day programme.

The event was organised by the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD).

As the sponsor of the Osun State Disability Protection Bill 2023, which has already passed its second reading, Adeyemi highlighted the progress made in the legislative process.

Additionally, a public hearing on the Bill was conducted by the Assembly, which was attended by JONAPWD leadership, as part of the steps toward enacting this law.

The Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, had on the floor of the Assembly promised the best consideration for People with Disabilities (PWDs) and make laws that would support and safeguard them.

Meanwhile, Adeyemi expressed to the gathering that Governor Ademola Adeleke is known for his commitment to an all-inclusive form of governance.

He assured that issues concerning People with Disabilities (PWDs) will be given due consideration, emphasising that their needs will not be overlooked by the government.

According to Adeyemi, the United Nations in this year’s message on International Day of Disabled Persons Day noted that the 1.3 billion persons with disabilities worldwide are amongst those who are most negatively affected by this limited progress.

That includes continued exclusion from public goods and services and high levels of discrimination. To deliver the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities, disability inclusion must be embedded across every dimension of development.

He stated further that, “Governor Adeleke loves people living with disabilities and he has done everything possible to see the Bill protecting you (PWDs) passed. He will sign the bill into law immediately after we pass it early next year.

Osun State Government is implementing policies that protect the rights of people with disabilities and ensure their inclusion in various aspects of society.

Governor Ademola will also create programs and initiatives to increase employment opportunities and workplace accessibility for people with disabilities,” the lawmaker assured.

Adeyemi also donated money to the organisation and urged them to see themselves as part of society.
