Ukraine ready for ceasefire, Putin to decide — Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Saturday that Ukraine is prepared to agree to an unconditional ceasefire, emphasising the need for Russia to make the next move toward ending the war.
Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome, Macron described their discussion via his X as “very positive,” reiterating that both leaders share the goal of ending the conflict.
“Ending the war in Ukraine, that is the goal we share with President Trump,” Macron said.
The French leader confirmed that Ukraine is ready to halt hostilities unconditionally and is willing to work with both European and American partners to bring about peace.
President Zelenskyy reiterated this to me today,” Macron said.
Now, it’s up to President Putin to prove that he truly wants peace.”
Macron also reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through the Coalition of the Willing, a diplomatic initiative launched in Paris earlier this year to coordinate international efforts for a ceasefire and long-term resolution.
We will continue our efforts within the Coalition of the Willing launched in Paris last March, to achieve both this ceasefire and a complete, lasting peace in Ukraine,” he noted.
Zelenskyy is in Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican. On the sidelines of the visit, he held talks with United States President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Zelenskyy described the meeting with Trump as “very symbolic.”
