Student Union Kick As OAU Allegedly Plans To Increase Tuition Fee
The students’ union association of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have strongly opposed the alleged plan by the institution to increase the tuition and hostel accommodation.
The students’ union in a statement signed by the President, Omoboriowo Damilola, the Secretary General, Babatimehin Kinfeosi, and the Public Relations Officer, Aka Daniel on Sunday, a copy obtained by Osun Defender, rejected the move in its totality.
The union stated that the school management had proposed a 50% increase in tuition fees and a 100% hike in hostel accommodation fees.
In the statement, the union further asserted that it had rejected these proposed fees during the meeting with the school’s management.
The statement reads,”In an emergency meeting, held at the level of the DSA, the school management, via the DSA informed us of a proposed 50% and 100% increment in some of our charges (the payable sundry charge called ‘school fees’ by us, and the accommodation fees respectively). We vehemently oppose this drastic and rash increment in fees.
“As a United Union, we prioritize the interests of each and every one of us and are committed to protecting our well-being.
“Be rest assured that we are actively engaging the school management to ensure that this increment does not stand. We are exploring all measures to make sure our interests stand.
“We reiterate our stance against any form of exploitation or unfair treatment of one and all students of Great Ife. We will continue to advocate for a total reversal.”
Meanwhile, the management is yet to communicate the decision officially to the students.
When contacted by Osun Defender, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, refuted the claim of a proposed increment.
He stated that no concrete evidence supports the allegation.
According to him,” Let those who tell you give you a concrete evidence.
“So if we have implemented the supposed proposal now, then it is from that basis you will now ask me question. Not that you get information that something is about to happen then you will now ask me questions, not that you got information that something is about to happen.”
